Chiang Mai is a city with a long history and a large number of important temples. In Thai a temple is called a Wat. This tour includes five of my favourite temples.

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is located 3,520 feet above sea level on top of Doi Suthep mountain. This temple has a Chiang Saen style chedi and the base is recessed with an octagonal bell decorated with 2-tiered golden Jangko, built in Lanna art style.

The views across Chiang Mai from the top of Doi Suthep are not to missed either!

Wat Pha Lat is a jungle temple located in the Doi Suthep - Pui National Park area. This temple has a history of more than 500 years and was built as a resting point for monks on pilgrimage to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep.

Wat Umong is a 700 year old temple making it one of the oldest in Chiang Mai. The complex is located at the foot of Doi Pui Mountain. The complex has a range of old ruins, meditation tunnels and a large stupa. There is also a monastery so there are always monks walking around.

Wat Suan Dok is known for its large number of white chedis or pagodas. It is located in an area once used as a Royal flower garden so it's name literally means “flower garden temple”.

Wat Chedi Luang is located in the historic centre of Chiang Mai and was built between the 14th and 15th century. Its huge chedi gave the temple its name and makes it one of the tallest temples in Chiang Mai. The Lanna-style chedi houses a Jade Buddha which is a must see.
